{"id":1803,"date":"2019-11-16T05:01:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-16T05:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centredart.in\/?post_type=project&#038;p=1803"},"modified":"2021-10-01T11:00:06","modified_gmt":"2021-10-01T11:00:06","slug":"home-away-from-home","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/centredart.in\/fr\/project\/home-away-from-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Away from Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><p><strong>Par Mario D\u2019Souza<\/strong><\/p><\/h1>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Du 16 au 26 novembre 2019<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/centredart.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1911_HOME_AWAYjpg-1-395x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1800\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p><p>Opening on Saturday 16th Nov, 5 \u2013 7pm<br\/>Artist Workshop on Saturday 23rd Nov, 8am \u2013 4pm<br\/>Artist Talk on Saturday 23rd Nov at 5pm<br\/>In residency at La Petite Maison, Mario d\u2019Souza\u2019s subject of research is mixed cultures, discovering new spaces and transforming it to share the experiences of everyday community life.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><em>After a two-year residency in the Parisian \u2018Le Mobilier National\u2019, Indo-French artist Mario d\u2019Souza dreamed of another voyage to India; the country that remains his second home and where he spent the first 22 years of his life. When a project with \u2018Fondation Martell\u2019 culminated in an auction that raised sufficient funds to cover this journey, he eagerly confirmed his participation in Auroville\u2019s collaborative artist platform \u2018La Petite Maison\u2019; a program largely inspired by Mario\u2019s own enthusiasm. After Auroville, Mario\u2019s journey continues onwards to a residency and exhibition in Delhi, before returning to France for a residency with \u2018Fondation Rothschild\u2019.<\/em><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p>At the age of 22, Mario left India to explore France, while on a scholarship of \u2018\u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts\u2019. He says it took him 18 years to pinpoint with exact precision what inspires him as a person and as an artist: \u201cTruth\u201d, he says, \u201cis what drives me. And this, in my life and in my work, has become my priority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Inspired to portray the promise held in a childhood memory and to capture and share the essence of cultural elements that are alive to him, Mario d\u2019Souza creates art with the vitality of local traditional objects, colors and textures. Entwined in Mario\u2019s memory that he calls \u2018story of the mind\u2019 where he raises himself by vigorously clutching the helm of his mother\u2019s saree is the conscious feel that this saree texture bestowed him confidence, safety, gravity, fullness, and strength.<\/p>\n\n<p>From the magnitude of this moment where he realized he was held by his own grasp, emerged his paramount fascination with hands and all things hand-made. \u201cHandicrafts and artisan products are testimonies to the human hands that toil and create things\u201d, Mario says, \u201cWatching a weaver make a basket or a box is like going on a world tour: until you open it you are going on a journey, imagining what it contains, and it can be filled with emotions and love, and then shared with someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The recurring theme of hands and focal point in his drawings followed him to Auroville. He reveals: \u201cHere, we see hands in prayer, hands that dig and plant in the Earth, hands in rituals, hands in movement; they are the screen through which you can see the inner soul. The hands bring the inner soul to work. Silent hands are lost.\u201d The form, shape and movement of different hands is a key element of Mario\u2019s exhibition, in which he showcases his continued research in the context of his experience in Auroville. Reinforcing Mario\u2019s drawings is how he chooses to present them; each one is carefully mounted in a custom handmade wooden frame, made by Gagan.<\/p>\n\n<p>During his month in residency at \u2018La Petite Maison\u2019 Mario connected, exchanged, and engaged with the wide array of people who helped him create the material for his artwork. He explains that throughout his stay, there was no compromise on quality of material. Daily, Mario uncovered its true value and learned how to reward it fairly. To name a few, Mario approached Vanaville to make boxes out of marble paper from Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper Factory, sat and conversed with a basket weaving family in Kuilappalayam, connected with merchants of handloom sarees in Pondicherry, and visited Auroville\u2019s EcoService to collect recycled items.<\/p>\n\n<p>By spending time in Auroville and the outdoors Mario discovered again the world as he knew it as a child. The beautiful green canopy at his doorstep he found spiritually moving, contemplating on the perfection and specificity of each leaf. \u201cA mango tree leaf is different from a laurel leaf, which is different from a palm leaf\u201d he observes. His drawing are inspired by this contemplation, as he paid particular attention to the forms that connect people and nature.<\/p>\n\n<p>Mario chose the materials and colors for his work carefully. Transported back in time, he was flooded with memories of how he used to write greeting cards as a child, on Ashram paper. Honoring the synchronicity of the memory, he chose to use the same paper to cover the boxes that hold handcrafted and handwoven items. In a perfect blend of memories, research, and passion, and with a silent mantra of \u2018mother\u2019 flowing through him, Mario prepared and painted 20 handcrafted boxes. In what Mario describes as a \u201cmosaic of community\u201d each box is laid out carefully and\u00a0 holds a different drawing and a specific accompanying saree cloth.
