Photo exhibition of the early days of Auroville by Dominique Darr
At midnight on August 15, 1969, the first caravan for Auroville leaves the Place des Invalides in Paris. Dominique Darr is there to immortalize the departure of these young adventurers who are setting off on that expedition with the aim of attempting an unprecedented experience: build the city of the future mankind, a few kilometers from Pondicherry on the Coromandel Coast, in India.
The photographer will document the birth of Auroville in all its aspects, taking thousands of shots, becoming a privileged witness to both material and spiritual growth. She is there when the first inhabitants settle on the site of the future city; she follows its development, its daily life, its difficulties and hopes. She captures the extraordinary atmosphere which sustains these pioneers of the unknown and gives a new dimension to each action, each event.
She tirelessly photographs the construction of the Matrimandir, the soul of Auroville, which gathers builders from around the world on its immense site.
Each photograph by Dominique Darr is an action at the service of a vision: that of a dream that is being embodied.
